February already...!?
Wow, already February; the days are getting longer, the cold is getting warmer. Yep, it's a balmy -11 today, with the promise of -16 as the high, and -30 as the low as the week progresses. But the little dusting of snow this morning gives me hope of a warm-up, maybe, possibly...So much so that I've started ordering my garden seeds and planning new gardens. Got an idea to use colorful and clear 750ml or so sized bottles inverted slightly and stacked with buffering dirt in a cordwood-style construction for a new herb bed. The bottle bottoms will face south, protruding slightly out of the dirt. My hope is that the sun will heat the bottles, the ensuing condensation will drain into the dirt and the heat will warm the garden earlier so my herbs will get a jump start on the season. And, well, I just love colored glass and stones in the garden, especially after a rain or watering. If it works, I'll try the same around a new koi pond. Gotta think that one out though in case the moose decide to drink, don't want them crushing my bottles. Must run, but hope this entry finds everyone healthy, happy and warm..especially my friends down in the midwest storms...:-)

I still think that that garden idea is an awesome one. The only thing I worry about is that the roots of the herbs will get too much water and cause rot. Good drainage!

No, the bottles will not produce so much condensation that the roots will rot. These will be raised beds, with sand under the soil and above the original ground level. Since there will be plenty of soil between the bottles, I doubt a tremendous amount of moisture will come from them. My only concern is with moose in the winter. If they step on the bed above the bottles, the bottles might get crushed from their weight.
